The Department Computer Lab

The lab is intended to provide physics majors and graduate students with additional computational resources for their coursework and research. The lab includes

  • 16 iMacs
  • a high-speed B&W laser printer
  • loaded software such as Mathematica 6.0 and IDL

Location and Hours

Optics Building room 249
M-F 9am-5pm

Allowed Users

The lab is restricted to physics majors (with a Program of Study on file), physics graduate students, and students enrolled in PH306.

The Sucess Center next door in OB 253 has PCs for general student use.

User Accounts

There are 16 student-use iMacs and one on the front desk for the instructor/administrator. On each of the student-use iMacs, there are two accounts: one for a local administrator and one for students.

  • All students should use, and thus share, the student account.
  • Note that any material in your home folder is basically public among other students, and can also be deleted by them! You should save any material on removable media before logging out, or just work from a USB drive or portable external hard drive.
  • All user files in the student home directory will also be periodically erased securely (and cannot be recovered).

Student Account Name and Password

If you are a physics major, PH 306 student, or graduate student, fill in the account form to request the student username and password. Upon verification, you will be emailed this information and placed on a mailing list. The password will be changed often, and the mailing list will allow us to keep you informed of the new password.

Use Policy

By receiving a password, you agree to the Use Policy.

It's simple:

  1. Never share the password with anyone. And that means anyone. Your access will be immediately revoked if you do.
  2. Printing is restricted to coursework-related items. And don't abuse the privaledge.
