The Physics Major

All majors in physics must take the following courses: PH 110, 111-116, 251, 301, 305, 351, and 499. The introductory 100-level courses provide the basic physics foundations and are necessary prerequisites to the remaining upper level courses, both core and elective. Physics majors also choose 18 hours of 300- and 400-level courses, both lecture and laboratory, from science areas such as physics, optics, astrophysics, and atmospheric and environmental science, to complete their major requirements.

Engineering Physics Option

An engineering physics option, requiring either PH 337 or PH 306 and 30 hours of cognate engineering courses in lieu of the 18 hours of science courses, is also available. This cognate is approved jointly by the physics advisor and the College of Engineering, and the courses must be included on the student’s program of study.

Math Minor

All physics majors are required to minor in mathematics. A mathematics minor under the physics major includes at a minimum the following courses: MA 171, MA 172, MA 201, MA 244, one 300-level MA course, and one 400-level MA course. Also, MA238 is strongly suggested.
